Burn The Word
Burn The Word is a poster I designed to reflect my own feelings towards the pervasive use of the word “faggot” in contemporary culture. Illustrating the word’s origins, where in medieval culture it was meant to represent a literal pile of sticks, and later adapted to represent the mass-burning of queer people as part of medieval tradition, it degrades queer culture in its entirety to be nothing more than kindling. There are very few words that make me cringe when I hear them, but this is one that never fails to make me feel equal parts uncomfortable and disgusted. I decided to photograph matches and create a photographic collage lettering piece which could at once illustrate the origin of the word, as well as communicate the shrill coldness of the concept.
